Sarah Nordgren named an AP deputy managing editor with new global recruiting responsibilities

NEW YORK -- Sarah Nordgren, director of state news for The Associated Press, has been named a deputy managing editor, taking on responsibility for global recruiting. The appointment was announced by Mike Silverman, senior managing editor to whom she will continue to report.

In her new role, Nordgren will coordinate recruitment, hiring and retention efforts for AP's global news staff to address such issues as diversity, development needs and succession planning. She will work closely with department heads and the Human Resources department.

"Sarah is the ideal person to take the lead on this important initiative for the news department," Silverman said. "She has a strong record of finding, nurturing and developing talent."

Nordgren also will continue to direct state news, leading a team that oversees the AP news staff and the news reports in all 50 states. She has been director of state news since 2003, and for three years before that served as deputy director.

She joined the AP in 1985 in Chicago and worked there for 14 years, including assignments as a reporter specializing in children and family issues, a desk supervisor and assistant chief of bureau. She won three Lisagor Awards from the Chicago Headline Club, one each for writing, reporting and magazine writing.

In 1999, she left to become Page 1 editor at the Daily Herald in Arlington Heights, Ill., but returned to AP a year later for the deputy job in state news.

Nordgren is a native of Omaha, Neb. She graduated from William Smith College and received a master's degree in American Studies from Boston University. She previously worked for Chicago's City News Bureau and for United Press International.
